Team Mullen broke their championship-winning streak in Grand Rapids to Team Trottier, but they reclaimed that title this weekend in Hershey with a 5-1 win over Team Murphy in the final. Here’s how they got another taste of victory in Week 4 …
“A good thing about this week was that we didn't let last weekend bother us,” Head Coach Joe Mullen said. “We knew we lost to a good team.”
Team Trottier and Team Mullen met in the opening round of play. Team Mullen had a 3-1 lead over Team Trottier heading into the second half and ended up securing the rematch game with a 4-2 win. In what might have been the finest comeback of the tournament thus far, Team Carbonneau defeated Team Fuhr 5-3 for their first win of the season with five unanswered goals in response to Team Fuhr’s opening three goals of the game. In the highest-scoring game of the evening, Team LeClair dominated the scoreboard and advanced to the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over Team Murphy.
“Team Trottier is a team that we had to see in the first round and that was probably the toughest game for us mentally to get by because they did beat us last week,” Mullen said. “But we succeeded in that.”
In Team Carbonneau’s first semifinal appearance, they took Team Mullen to a shootout after being tied up at 1 after two periods. After Joe Whitney scored the lone goal in the shootout, Team Mullen captured the victory to advance to the final for the fourth straight week with their 2-1 win. Team Murphy and Team LeClair met for the second time Saturday evening in the second semifinal game. The two teams were tied at 3 heading into the second half, but Team Murphy broke that tie and built on it thanks to contributions from up and down their lineup to come out on top with a 6-3 win.
“We had a really terrific game, and both teams had a terrific game when we played Team Carbonneau,” Mullen said. “Their goalie played extremely well, and our goalie played extremely well. We were down one, we tied it up late and then went into an overtime shootout. We were lucky enough to win it, but that was a squeaker and trying to get by that one was tough also.”
Team Murphy and Team Mullen battled for the championship title in Las Vegas in Week 1, and they did so again this weekend in Hershey. Team Mullen held Team Murphy without a goal in the first eight minutes of play, and Jacob Theut only allowed one goal in net in the last eight minutes to give Team Mullen their third tournament win with a final score of 5-1.
“In the third game, we seemed to have control right from the start, and we just kept it that way to get the victory,” Mullen said.
