Pittsburgh Weekend Preview

Steel City, here we come! 3ICE is traveling to Pittsburgh, a tour stop that can be considered a “home game” for some coaches, a few players, and a handful of members of the off-ice 3ICE team. There are ties to Pittsburgh on each team, so these Pittsburgh-natives and former members of the Pittsburgh Penguins turn to home-ice advantage in hopes of taking home the championship in Week 6.

“Anytime you do anything in your home building, it's exciting,” Bob Errey said. “It’s exciting for them to play in a building where there are a lot of championship banners, and we're all looking forward to it. I think this is big for everybody.”

Team Carbonneau won their first championship of the season last weekend in London, and they look to build on that influential victory this weekend in Pittsburgh. The six points they earned throughout their three games of play moved them up two spots in the standings, so the Red Team holds the fourth-place spot heading into this weekend.

While Team LeClair fell just short of securing their first championship win last weekend, their very own Brandon Hawkins will be wearing the Golden Helmet in Pittsburgh. Kevin Fitzgerald of Team Mullen passes the throne over to Hawkins who scored five goals in London to earn him this title.

To start the afternoon, Team LeClair and Team Mullen will take the ice for Game 1. The reigning champions, Team Carbonneau will face off against Team Murphy in Game 2. For the final game of pool play, Team Trottier and Team Fuhr will meet at center ice to battle for a spot in the semifinals.

Four of the six head coaches are former Pittsburgh Penguins and two of them, Joe Mullen and John LeClair, will meet right off the bat. So, will Pittsburgh native Tyler Murovich fuel Team Mullen past his brother Mason Murovich and Team LeClair in the Battle of Pittsburgh (and of the brothers)? Will former Penguin, Chris Conner help Team Carbonneau advance past another former Penguin, Larry Murphy, and his team to win their second championship of the season. Or will Ryan Malone (Pittsburgh native and former Penguin) help Team Fuhr move up in the standings with a win over a Pittsburgh-filled Team Trottier with former Penguin Bobby Farnham and head coach Bryan Trottier, and Pittsburgh native Parker Milner.

Which player or coach with Pittsburgh ties will leave the Steel City as Champions? Join us at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday to find out!

“To get a chance to say that you were at the inaugural season of 3ICE is unreal and I know for sure you're going to see some unbelievable skill because that's what the league is all about,” Steve Mears said. “It's going to be fast and it's going to be entertaining. As we've seen, the highlight reel moves of some of these supremely talented and skilled players in this league are absolutely incredible. Even though we’re only five weeks in, we've got a whole year's worth of highlights, and I think Pittsburgh will be no different.”
