Skater Spotlight with Jake Theut
The championship victory in Hershey was extra sweet for Jake Theut and Team Mullen. They were put to the task of facing Team Trottier in the first round of play, but they didn’t let the Final in Grand Rapids get under their skin. Instead, it pushed them to victory.
“It was good to get those guys right away because they got us the weekend before in the final,” Theut said. “So that win in the first round gave our team a jump, and then we just kept riding the train to come away with the win.”
The leadership in the room is the backbone of the team’s success and has been since Week 1. The veterans in the room know their roles, the rest of the team follows their lead which allows them to find win after win.
“We have a lot of good veteran players and a lot of guys with a lot of experience,” Theut said. “We know if we stick to our process and to our game plan, we'll come out on top. So, when things get hectic, those guys calm everything down and calm everyone else down.”
On top of the leadership, the close-knit group clicks so well on the ice because of the friendships they have created off the ice. They use their free time at the rink to their advantage and when they’re not competing on the ice, they’re in the locker room talking about their game plan for their next matchup.
“It feels like we've been playing with each other for a full hockey season,” Theut said. “We're already talking about seeing each other and hanging out after 3ICE is over and I just think that attests to how close we are as a group. We've become like best friends almost in that locker room and I think that's translating on the ice with chemistry amongst everyone.”
Theut’s summer consists of working out during the week and then traveling with 3ICE every weekend. As someone who loves to compete, the goalie is using his time with 3ICE to prepare for the actual hockey season while also focusing on the end goal of 3ICE – winning the Patty Cup.
“I'm a competitor and I'm excited to go to battle with Team Mullen every weekend,” Theut said. “We'll try to get as many wins as we can, keep the momentum up going forward, and hopefully make it into the playoff weekend.”
